Technology, Fashion and the Textile Cluster

The Northern region of Portugal has been participating in several public policy discussion panels in a European scenario. An example of this is the Regiotex initiative, which comprises 15 European regions and aims to promote the competitiveness of the European textile and clothing industries through the articulation of joint actions and policies between these various regions.

The excellent performance of companies in this sector in the national economic context and their contribution to the chapter on employability justify, at the outset, a leading position in what concerns the work on the future of this industry at European level.

Widely known are the numbers that the Textile and Clothing sector presents in this region: 87% of the sector turnover and 85% of employment. In addition, there is another indicator that, although less well known, is also crucial for Portugal's presence in this initiative - the North has the highest rate of employability when compared to other European regions.

The ambition of the national leaders is to influence European public policies in order to bring to the Portuguese STV and to the North an ecosystem favorable to innovation through "smart" public investment and aligned with the needs of industry: more investment in technology, people , new products and processes; more innovation in companies; more qualification and training; better market position, greater competitiveness and, consequently, more growth.

They integrate the Regiotex initiative, representing the Northern region of Portugal, the Portuguese Textile Cluster and the North Region Coordination Commission (CCDR-n). The defense of the strategy of the North region and the Textile and Clothing industry as a fundamental bet for the growth of the national economy is the challenge proposed, embraced by the representation of Portugal.
